Potassium carbonate (200 mmol, 27.6 g) was added to a solution of ethyl benzoylacetate (100 mmol, 19.2 g) and potassium iodide (20 mmol, 3.3 g) in dry acetone (100 mL). The resulting solution was refluxed, and chloroacetone (110 mmol, 10.7 g) was added dropwise. Analysis of the reaction mixture by GC/MS indicated the presence of Intermediate 2. Solid material was filtered from the reaction mixture, then washed with 200 mL acetone. The resulting filtrate was concentrated under vacuum, redissolved in ether, then washed three times with water (100 mL). The organic layer was separated from the aqueous layer, and dried over MgSO4. The solids were separated, and the organic solvents removed under vacuum to yield a yellow/orange oil. The crude oil was purified by Kugelrohr distillation (b.p. 175-185 at 0.65 Torr.).
