5-[(tert-Butoxycarbonylmethyl-methoxycarbonyl-amino)-methyl]-pyrrolidine-1,2-dicarboxylic acid 1-tert-butyl ester 2-ethyl ester (304 mg, 0.68 mmol) was added to a solution of hydrogen chloride in dioxane (4N, 15 mL). After 16 hours the solvent was removed under reduced pressure and the resulting residue was azeotroped with toluene to provide 5-[(carboxymethyl-methoxycarbonyl-amino)-methyl]-pyrrolidine-2-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (224 mg)—assumed 100% yield.
