Procedure
Bis(p-nitrophenyl)carbonate (1.52 g, 5.0 mmol) was dissolved in DCM (20 mL). tert-Butyl 4-(2-hydroxyethyl)piperazine-1-carboxylate from the previous step (1.15 g, 5.0 mmol) and NMM (0.55 mL, 5.0 mmol) were added and the reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 16 hours. The reaction mixture was diluted with DCM (40 mL) and washed with sat aq NaHCO3 solution (5×50 mL), dried (Na2SO4) and concentrated in vacuo to give a yellow oil. The oil was purified by recrystallisation from EtOAc and heptane to give 2-(4-(tert-butoxycarbonyl)piperazin-1-yl)ethyl 4-nitrophenyl carbonate (1.208 g, 61%) as an orange solid.
