Procedure
A solution of 2,4-pentanedione (7.2 ml), aniline (7.65 ml) and a catalytic amount of para-toluenesulfonic acid monohydrate (665 mg) in toluene (70 ml) was refluxed for 8 h in a round bottom flask equipped with a Dean Stark apparatus and condenser. The solution was concentrated to dryness and the crude purified by CC (Hept/EA 8:2, then 7:3) to give 6.74 g of the desired compound.
