Procedure

Combine 2-[2-(2-methoxy-phenyl)-cyclohexylmethoxy]-1,3,5-trimethyl-benzene (0.810 g, 2.71 mmol), sodium cyanide (2.13 g, 43.4 mmol), and d6-DMSO (10.0 mL) at rm temperature. Heat and stir at 100° C. under nitrogen for 18 hours. Cool to room temperature and add ethyl acetate then add water and wash 5× with brine. Separate layers and dry over anhydrous sodium sulfate. Concentrate and flash chromatography using 0 to 30% ethyl acetate/hexanes to yield the titled compound (0.346 g, 56%). TLC Rf=0.43 in 20% ethyl acetate/hexanes. 1H NMR (CDCl3): 7.2 (m, 1H), 7.0 (m, 1H), 6.9 (m, 2H), 3.8 (s, 3H), 3.3 (m, 1H), 2.5 (m, 1H), 2.3 (m, 1H), 2.1 (m, 1H), 1.8 (m, 6H), 1.4 (m, 2H).
