In step (8) of Reaction Scheme I, a quinoline-3,4-diamine or [1,5]naphthyridine-3,4-diamine of Formula XXII is reacted with a carboxylic acid equivalent, which is selected such that it will provide the desired —CH2—(CH2)d-Hal substituent in a 1H-imidazo[4,5-c]quinoline or 1H-imidazo[4,5-c][1,5]naphthyridine of Formula XXIII. Suitable carboxylic acid equivalents include ortho esters, acid halides, and imidates or salts thereof.
