Procedure

A mixture of 1-(4-trifluoromethoxyphenyl)-2-ethoxycarbonylmethyl-5-(5-trifluoromethyl-2-pyridinyloxy)indole-3-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (80 mg, 0.13 mmol, see step (a) above), NaOH (aq, 1 M, 1.1 mL), EtOH (0.5 mL) and THF (0.5 mL) was stirred at 100° C. for 9 h, cooled, diluted with H2O and acidified to pH 5 with citric acid (aq, 1 M). The precipitate was collected, washed with H2O and Et2O to give the title compound, 30 mg (42%), mp 203° C.
