Procedure
To a solution of 4-hydroxy-3-iodo-5-methoxybenzoic acid methyl ester (4.6 g) in chloroform (30 mL) were successively added diisopropylethylamine (3.88 g) and chloromethyl methyl ether (1.88 g) under ice-cooling, and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 1 hour. The reaction solution was washed successively with ethyl acetate, 1N hydrochloric acid, water, and saturated brine, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, and concentrated. The residue was purified by column chromatography on silica gel with solvent (hexane:ethyl acetate=3:1, v/v) to give the title compound (2.70 g).
