A solution of 4-[(1R)-1-hydroxyethyl]-1-piperidinecarbonitrile (200 mg, 1.30 mmol) in DMF (5 mL) was treated with ammonium chloride (104 mg, 1.95 mmol) and sodium azide (126 mg, 1.95 mmol) at room temperature. The mixture was heated at 100° C. for 14 h. After allowing the mixture to cool, the solid was removed by filtration and washed with DMF. The filtrate was concentrated to give (1R)-1-[1-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)-4-piperidinyl]ethanol, which was used without further purification.
