A solution of sodium hydroxide (3.30 g) in ethanol/H2O (60 ml/60 ml) was added to 2-mercaptopyrimidine-4,6-diol (10.00 g) and the mixture stirred for 10 min. Benzyl bromide (13.45 g) was then added dropwise and the mixture heated at 60° C. for 2 h. The reaction was cooled to 0° C. for 1 h before the precipitate was filtered and washed with H2O (100 ml) and then dried in vacuo to afford the subtitle compound as a cream solid. Yield: 15.0 g.
