Procedure
To a solution of 2-(tert-butoxycarbonyl(methyl)amino)acetic acid (1.05 g, 0.0056 mol) in CH2Cl2 at 0° C. under argon atmosphere was added DMAP (0.021 g), 3-(3-chlorophenylamino)propanenitrile (1 g, 0.0056 mol) and DCC (1.27 g, 0.0061 mol). The reaction mixture was allowed to stir at room temperature for 24 h. The resulting suspension was filtered, the filtrate concentrated under reduced pressure and the crude residue was subjected to silica gel chromatography to give the tert-butyl 2-((3-chlorophenyl)(2-cyanoethyl)amino)-2-oxoethyl(methyl)carbamate (1.2 g, 80%). 1H NMR (CDCl3) δ 1.45 (s, 9H), 2.7 (m, 2H), 2.85 (m, 2H), 3.6-3.75 (m, 2H), 3.9 (m, 2H), 7.1-7.3 (m, 2H), 7.4 (m, 2H).
