A mixture of 6-(3-[1,3]dioxolan-2-yl-5-methyl-phenoxy)-5-isopropyl-1H-pyrimidine-2,4-dione (1.33 g, 4 mmol), PPTS (201 mg, 0.8 mmol), and water (10 drops) in acetone (20 ml) was heated under reflux for 4 hr. After cooling to room temperature, the mixture was evaporated in vacuo and the residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (eluent, CHCl3: methanol (95:5)) to afford 1.03 g (89%) of a white solid. m.p. 241-242° C.; 1H NMR (200 MHz, CD3OD/CDCl3) δ 1.03 (6H, d, J=7.2 Hz), 2.34 (3H, s), 2.84 (1H, m), 6.99 (1H, s), 7.17 (1H, s), 7.38 (1H, s), 9.81 (1H, s).
