Procedure

A solution of 13.5 g (0.04 mole) of 2,7-bis(2-chloroethoxy)fluoren-9-one in 100 ml of concentrated sulfuric acid is slowly reacted with 12 ml of a 30% hydrogen peroxide solution at room temperature. The reaction which is strongly exothermic is controlled by cooling the stirred reaction mixture in an ice-water bath. The cooled reaction mixture is poured onto 500 ml of an ice-water mixture and the resulting 3,8-bis(2-chloroethoxy)-6H-dibenzo[b,d]pyran-6-one which separates is isolated.
