Procedure

To a solution of 1,2-dimethyl-3,5-diphenylpyrazolium p-toluene sulfonate (10.0 g.) in 500 ml. of water is added a 20% aqueous solution of perchloric acid with vigorous stirring. The product separates immediately as a white solid. It is collected by filtration, washed with water and dried to give 8.3 g. of the desired product having a melting point of 183° C.-184° C., and the following elemental analysis: Calcd. for C17H17ClN2O4 : C, 58.75; H, 4.92; N, 8.05. Found: C, 58.21; H, 4.84; N, 7.95.
