Procedure

Three grams (0.0098 mole) of 3-benzoyl-4-hydroxy-6-phenyl-1-methyl-2(1H)-pyridone is added to 30 milliliters of ethanol saturated with methylamine. The mixture is refluxed for two hours with a stream of methylamine passing through. The mixture is cooled and the resulting solid filtered and washed with ethanol and then ether to give 3-(α-N-methyliminobenzyl)-4-hydroxy-6-phenyl-1-methyl-2(1H)-pyridone; m.p. 225°-227° C.
