Procedure

N1-(4-Methoxybenzoyl)-1,2-benzenediamine (3.0 g, 12 mmol), glutaric anhydride (1.7 g, 15 mmol), and pyridine (7 mL) were dissolved in methylene chloride (2 mL) and allowed to stir at ambient temperature for 5 h. The reaction mixture was quenched with water (2 mL) and concentrated in vacuo. The resultant residue was acidified with aqueous sulfuric acid. The resulting white solid was collected and dried at 60° C. in vacuo to yield 3.88 g (88%) of the title compound.
