A solution of 3,5-dinitrobenzyl chloride (2.2 g, 10 mmol) in DMA (40 mL) was treated with potassium phthalimide (1.9 g, 10 mmol) and the mixture stirred 12 h. The mixture was then concentrated and the solid residue washed with ethyl acetate, dried, washed with water and dried to give 2.5 g (76%) of essentially pure adduct as a white solid: 1H NMR 400 MHz (DMSO) δ5.06 (s, 2H); 7.82-7.97 (m, 4H); 8.62 (s, 2H); 8.74 (s, 1H).
