Procedure

0.564 g (2 mmol) of 5-(2-ethoxycarbonyl-ethyl)-thiophene-2-carboxylic acid tert-butyl ester were dissolved in 10 ml of dichloromethane. 2.5 ml of trifluoroacetic acid were added dropwise with stirring at room temperature. Stirring was continued for 5 hours until the starting compound was no more detectable by thin layer chromatography (TLC). The solvents were evaporated in vacuo to give 0.45 g of a crystalline residue which was sufficiently pure for use in the subsequent step.
