A mixture of 3-(3-iodophenyl)-5-(2-pyridyl)-1,2,4-oxadiazole (55 mg, 0.158 mmol), pyridine-3-boronic acid 1,3-propanediol cyclic ester (51.4 mg, 0.3152 mmol), and tetrakis(triphenylphosphine)palladium(0) Pd(PPh3)4, 25 mg, 0.0216 mmol), in a solution of ethylene glycol dimethyl ether (1.5 mL) and 2M sodium carbonate (1.5 mL) was heated in a sealed vial at 100° C. for 1 hour. The reaction was cooled, diluted with dichloromethane, washed with water and saturated brine, filtered, and concentrated. Silica gel chromatography using 40% and 60% ethyl acetate in hexane and then the treatment of 1M HCl (0.2 mL) afforded 29.4 mg (55.45%) 5-(2-pyridyl)-3-[3-(3-pyridyl)-phenyl]-1,2,4-oxadiazole hydrochloride. 1H-NMR (CDCl3), δ (ppm): 9.34 (s, 1H), 8.88 (m, 3H), 8.54 (s, 1H), 8.40 (d, 1H), 8.28 (d, 1H), 8.16 (d, 1H), 8.00 (m, 3H), 7.82 (m, 2H).
