Procedure
1-(N,N-Dimethylaminoethyl)-2-aminobenzimidazole (0.40 g, 1.96 mmol) was dissolved in CH2Cl2 (50 mL) and cooled to 0° C., triethylamine (2 mL) was added followed by 4-methybenzoyl chloride (0.26 g, 1.96 mmol). The reaction mixture was stirred at 0° C. for 1 h and at room temperature for an additional 1 h. The volatiles were evaporated and then the residue was purified by column chromatography using CH2Cl2-MeOH (9.8-0.2). The oily material collected (0.2 g) was dissolved in anhydrous ethyl ether and transformed to the hydrochloride salt. MS 322 (M+1). 1H NMR (DMSO): δ 2.48 (s, 3H), 2.81 and 2.86 (2s, 6H), 3.54 (m, 2H), 4.73 (m, 2H), 35 7.34 (m, 4H), 7.52 (2m, 2H), 8.14 (d, 2H), 10.79 (broad s, NH).
