To a solution of 4-pyridin-3-yl-imidazole (8.5 g) in THF (tetrahydrofuran) (293 mL) was added acetic acid (16.8 mL) and methacrolein (9.7 mL) and the resulting solution was heated under gentle reflux for 24 hours. Another 9.7 mL methacrolein was added and the solution was heated under reflux for another 24 hours. THF was then removed in vacuo and the residue was purified on a Flash 75 long column eluting with MeOH—CH2Cl2 to give the title compound as slightly yellow oil.
