Procedure
Intermediate 8 was dissolved in POCl3 (2 ml) and refluxed for 2 hours. The reaction mixture was cooled and poured onto ice. The solution was made basic (pH =9) by addition of solid sodium carbonate and extracted with diethyl ether. The combined organic layers were dried over sodium sulfate, filtered and concentrated, yielding 3-[6-(dimethylamino)-3-pyridinyl]-2,5-dimethyl-7-chloro-pyrazolo[2,3-a]pyrimidine (intermediate 9).
