Procedure

To a solution of 2-bromo-4-methylphenol (500 mg), in dimethyl sulphoxide (2 ml), was added freshly ground potassium carbonate (407 mg). The mixture was stirred for 20 minutes, and 4,6-dichloropyrimidine (432 mg) was added. The mixture was stirred at ambient temperature for 2 hours, and the reaction mixture preadsorbed onto silica gel (1 g) and purified by column chromatography (eluting with 10% ethyl acetate/dichloromethane) to yield a gum (571 mg, 71%). NMR: 2.35 (3H, s), 7.25 (2H, s), 7.5 (1H, s), 7.55 (1H, s), 8.7 (1H, s); MS; (electrospray) 451 (MH)+.
