N-Ethyl-N-(2,2-diethoxyethyl)-2,6-dinitro-4-trifluoromethylaniline (6.10 grams; 0.0154 mole), ethylene glycol (0.96 grams; 0.0154 mole) and toluenesulfonic acid (200 mg) were charged into a glass reaction vessel equipped with stirrer and thermometer. The reaction mixture was heated at 110° C. for a period of 2 hours. After this time the mixture was cooled to room temperature, dissolved in ethyl acetate and washed with water and saturated aqueous sodium bicarbonate. The washed product was then dried and stripped of solvent to yield the desired product N-ethyl-N-1,3-dioxolan-2-ylmethyl-2,6-dinitro-4-trifluoromethylaniline as an oil.
