To a 350 milliliter glass pressure bottle equipped with a magnetic stirrer was added 4.00 grams (0.015 moles) of 4-(2-hydroxybenzylideneamino)-1-naphthol prepared in Part A, 1.03 grams (0.018 moles) of methyl isocyanate, 100 milliliters of tetrahydrofuran and 5 drops of dibutyl tin diacetate. The resulting reaction mixture was stirred for 18 hours at room temperature after which the volatiles were removed under reduced pressure and the remaining residue dissolved in ether. The ethereal solution was washed twice with a 1% aqueous sodium bicarbonate solution and twice with a saturated brine solution, dried over magnesium sulfate and concentrated under reduced pressure to give 4.87 grams (0.015 moles) of 4-(2-hydroxybenzylideneamino)naphth-1-yl methylcarbamate in the form of a pale yellow solid having a melting point of 143°-145.5° C. and the following structural formula: ##STR16##
