Procedure

206 g (1 mole) of p-tert-octylphenol, 220 g (1 mole) of p-nonylphenol, 100.1 g (2.67 moles) of 80% paraformaldehyde and 0.8 g of p-toluenesulfonic acid were reacted under water reflux at 100° C. for 10 hours. A reaction intermediate was obtained consuming 85% of the used formaldehyde. Phenol (94 g; 1 mole) was added to the reaction intermediate, and reacted for 3 hours. The reaction mixture was then heated to 170° C. to dehydrate it and thereby to give a pale brown p-tert-octylphenol/p-nonylphenol/phenol/formaldehyde co-condensate.
