A mixture of the alcohol obtained as indicated above (1 g), 0.2 g of paraformaldehyde, 0.1 g of p-toluenesulphonic acid and 10 ml of acetic acid in the presence of a few drops of acetic anhydride was heated for 41/2 hour at 95° while stirring. The usual treatments of extraction, separation, drying, and evaporation gave 0.7 g of a product which was distilled on a bulb apparatus. The purity of the thus obtained compound was of about 95 % as shown by gas chromatographic analysis. This compound was in all respects identical to that prepared in Example 1.
