Reaction Steps
The reaction between 1-ethoxy-3-methyl-3,4-dihydroisoquinoline and hydrazine, which produced 1-hydrazino-3-methyl-3,4-dihydroisoquinoline, also produced a dimer, recrystallization of which from methanol-ethanol afforded 1,1'-azinobis(3-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline) (II: Y=CH3, Y' =Z=Z' =H) (2.2 g., m.p. 168°-171° C.).
