A mixture of 10.5 g of dodecyl 3-nitro-4-hydroxybenzoate obtained in Step 1 above and 100 ml of acetic acid was heated at 70° C. under a nitrogen atmosphere and 10 g of reducing iron was added thereto over a 5 minute period with stirring. The reaction mixture was filtered and the filtrate was poured into 500 ml of ice water to deposit the crystals. The crystals were washed and dried to obtain 8.2 g (yield 85%) of the desired compound having a melting point of 86° to 89° C.
