To a mixture of 4.8 g of 2-acetyl-6-methylaniline, 3 g of sodium acetate and 120 ml of ether was simultaneously added a solution of 13.2 g of bromoacetyl bromide in 30 ml of ether and 60 g of ice at -3° to 0° C. for 15 minutes. The resultant mixture was stirred at 0° to 5° C. for 2 hours. The ether layer was separated, washed with an aqueous solution of sodium carbonate, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and evaporated to give 2-bromo-2'-acetyl-6'-methylacetanilide as crystals. m.p. 97° - 100° C.
