ε-Caprolactam (750.00 g, 6.63 mol), water (1500 mL), and concentrated HCl (675 mL, 36-38%) are combined in a 5000 mL three-necked round bottomed flask fitted with a mechanical stirrer and condenser. The mixture is heated for 4 h at reflux, cooled to room temperature, and concentrated by rotary evaporation at 50° C. (water aspirator vacuum) to give 1 as a white solid. The absence of ε-caprolactam by TLC (Rf =0.21, THF) indicates the reaction is complete.
