0.99 g of N-(4-methoxycarbonylphenyl)-N-methyl-terephthalamic acid methyl ester was dissolved in 10 ml of acetonitrile and treated with 10 ml of 1N sodium hydroxide solution and the reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 16 hours. The mixture was then acidified with 1N hydrochloric acid and the resulting precipitate was filtered off yielding N-(4-carboxy-phenyl)-N-methyl-terephthalamic acid, which was used directly in the next step.
