A solution of 2.2 g of dimethyl (E)-stilbene-3,4'-dicarboxylate in 25 ml of dimethoxymethane and 12 ml of methanol was treated with 10 ml of 2M sodium hydroxide solution and heated under reflux for 18 hours. The reaction solution was concentrated. The aqueous residue was again diluted with water and acidified to pH 1 with 2N hydrochloric acid. The precipitate was filtered off under suction, rinsed with ice-water and dried at 60° C. overnight in a drying oven. There was obtained (E)-stilbene-3,4'-dicarboxylic acid as a light coloured powder, MS: m/z 268 (M+).
