Procedure
Protect the amino function in the 2-amino-3-hydroxy-octanoic acid by conversion thereof to an acetamido function by reaction with acetic anhydride, then esterify the resultant 2-acetamido-3-hydroxyoctanoic acid with methanol; reduce the resultant 2-acetamido-3-hydroxyoctanoic acid methyl ester with di-isobutylaluminum hydride according to known procedures to obtain 2-acetamido-3-hydroxyoctanal.
