Reaction Steps
0.05 moles of the aldehyde from Step A, 0.12 moles of hydroxylamine hydrochloride and sodium acetate (0.12 moles) are dissolved in a mixture of ethanol (100 ml.) and water (30 ml.). The reaction mixture is refluxed for 2 hours, cooled and water added until no more precipitate forms. The solid that separates is crystallized from ethanol to yield 3-trifluoromethyl-5-tert-butyl salicylaldehyde oxime.
