A mixture of 6.6 g. of methyl-5-(4'-fluorophenyl)-2-hydroxy-benzoate, 5.5 g. of potassium carbonate, 25 ml. of acetone, and 4.5 g. of allyl bromide is heated at reflux for 2 hours, and then stirred at 25° C. overnight. The reaction mixture is partitioned between 100 ml. of water and 100 ml. of ether, the ether solution is dried over magnesium sulfate and concentrated to a thick oil, 6.0 g. This material shows a strong absorption band in the infra-red at 5.75 μ (non-bonded ester) and is homogeneous by thin layer chromatography.
