A solution of 1-(4-chloro-2-(α-hydroxybenzyl)-benzyl)-3-phenethyl-thiourea (17 g; 0.041 mole) in dry acetone (400 ml) and 85 ml saturated ethanolic hydrogen chloride was stirred at room temperature for 20 hours. The reaction mixture was filtered. The filtrate was evaporated to yield the title compound in hydrochloride form (M.Pt. 120° decomp.).
