Procedure

To a solution of 46 g of 9-(chlorocarbonylmethyl)-9,10-dihydro-9,10-ethano-anthracene in 200 ml of xylene are added 10 g of 10% palladium carbon which is contaminated with quinoline-sulphur. Then at 120° C hydrogen is passed in and after 7 hours the catalyst is filtered off and the reaction mixture evaporated on vacuo. The residue is dissolved in methylene chloride and the methylene chloride solution is extracted with sodium carbonate solution. The organic phase is isolated, dried and evaporated, to yield as residue the crude 9,10-dihydro-9,10-ethano-anthryl-acetaldehyde.
