A 100-mL round-bottomed flask was charged with N-(2-methyl-2-phenylpropyl)-4-(trifluoromethyl)benzamide (2.69 g, 8.39 mmol), phosphorus pentaoxide (1.88 g, 16.8 mmol), toluene (40 mL) and phosphorous oxychloride (6.3 mL, 67.1 mmol). The reaction mixture was heated at 110° C. for 16 h and allowed to cool down to RT. Then it was poured over ice-water and neutralized with NaOH (10%). The organic phase was taken and the aqueous phase was extracted several times with EtOAc. The combined organic layers were washed with sat NaHCO3, water, brine and dried over Na2SO4. The solvent was removed under vacuum and the product used without further purification.
