A mixture of trans-4-aminocyclohexanol hydrochloride (1.0 g, 6.6 mmol) (Aldrich, Cat. #263761), N-carbethoxyphthalimide (1.4 g, 6.6 mmol) (Aldrich, Cat. #C5459), and triethylamine (2.0 mL, 14 mmol) in methylene chloride (10 mL) was stirred at r.t. overnight. The mixture was diluted with water, and extracted with ethyl acetate (3×20 mL). The combined organic layers were dried over Na2SO4, filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by flash chromatography on a silica gel column with ethyl acetate in hexanes to afford the desired product (1.2 g, 76%).
