3-fluoro-2-(hydroxymethyl)-5-(methylsulfonyl)phenol (0.11 g, 0.52 mmol) was dissolved in THF (dry) (5 ml). 2-bromo-1,1-dimethoxyethane (0.63 ml, 5.2 mmol) was added followed by concentrated H2SO4 (1 ml). The mixture was heated at 60° C. for 1 h. Water was added and the mixture extracted with EtOAc twice. The combined extracts were washed with brine and concentrated. Purification by flash column chromatography (isooctane/EtOAc) gave the title compound (0.073 g). MS m/z (rel. intensity, 70 eV) 326 (M+, 8), 324 (M+, 8), 231 (17), 202 (bp), 139 (21), 95 (42), 75 (34).
