To a solution of ester 3 (0.3 g, 0.72 mmol) in THF (6 mL) under N2 atmosphere was added 1M LiAlH4 in Et2O (2.2 mL, 2.20 mmol). The resulting mixture was stirred at RT for 2 h. 2 M NaOH (2 mL) was added dropwise and the precipitate was removed by filtration. The volatiles were removed in vacuo. The residue was dissolved in EtOAc (20 mL), washed with water (2×15 mL), brine (15 mL), dried (Na2SO4) and evaporated to dryness to give alcohol 4 as a white solid, 0.16 g (60%).
