To a stirred solution of 230 mg (1 mmol) methyl (2-bromothiophene-3-yl)acetate and 310 mg (1 mmol) 4-iodo-3-nitrobenzoyl chloride in 15 mL of dry CH2Cl2 was added 432 mg of AlCl3 (4 mmol) in four portions at room temperature. The resulting mixture was stirred overnight. The reaction mixture was slowly poured onto 5 g of ice and allowed to warm to room temperature. The organic layer was dried over MgSO4, filtered, and then concentrated in vacuo. The residue was purified by flash chromatography. (Hex/EtOAc=1:5) to give 310 mg of product as a light yellow solid (yield 60%).
