A solution of 3-bromo-4-methoxyphenylacetic acid (4.1 g, 16.7 mmol) and concentrated hydrogen chloride (2 drops) in EtOH (100 mL) were stirred at 80° C. for 3 days. After cooling to room temperature, the mixture was concentrated to dryness to give the title compound.
