A solution of 1-benzyl-4-(2-chloro-phenyl)-4-methyl-piperidine (0.59 g, 1.95 mmol) in 1,2-dichloroethane (10 mL) was treated with 1-chloroethyl chloroformate (0.28 mL, 2.6 mmol). This mixture was stirred for 12 hr at reflux, then evaporated in vacuo. The residue was redissolved in methanol (10 mL) and heated to reflux for 1 hr, then evaporated in vacuo. The resulting brown solid (the hydrochlorie salt) was washed with ethyl acetate, then freebased with ethyl acetate/sodium hydroxide to yield 0.30 g (72%) of the title compound, ESI-MS m/z: 246 [M+1].
