50 g trans-2,5 dimethylpiperazine was dissolved in 300 mL ethanol and treated with 26.36 mL (½ equivalents) benzylbromide. The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 12 hours and concentrated. The residue was taken up in ethyl acetate and washed with 10% aqueous sodium bicarbonate and saturated sodium chloride; dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate and concentrated to give crude 1-benzyl-trans-2,5-dimethylpiperazine, as an oil.
