3-(Pyridin-4-yl-acetyl)-benzonitrile (4.91 g, 22.1 mmol) was dissolved into dry toluene (0.2 ml) and dimethoxymethyl-dimethyl-amine (10.6 g, 88.5 mmol) was added. The reaction mixture was stirred at 80° C. for 2 h under nitrogen atmosphere. The solvent was removed under vacuum and crude 3-((E)-3-Dimethylamino-2-pyridin-4-yl-acryloyl)benzonitrile was used in the next step without further purification.
