To a mixture of β-ketoester (ethyl 7-methyl-3-oxooctanoate) in 100 mL of toluene ammonium acetate (5.34 g, 69.3 mmol) was added. The mixture was allowed to stir overnight at reflux. The reaction mixture was dissolved in ethyl acetate and the organics washed with H2O (3×) and brine. The organics were then dried over sodium sulfate, filtered and concentrated to yield a yellow oil: TLC (EtOAc/hexanes (1:4)): Rf=0.39
