Procedure

A solution of 20 parts of sodium 20-cyano-3β-hydroxypregna-5,17(20)-diene-21-carboxylate in 1000 parts of warm water is acidified with 100 parts of 4% hydrochloric acid. Approximately 1 hour later, the precipitate which has formed is separated by filtration, washed with water, dried in vacuo, and recrystallized from methanol to give 20-cyano-3β-hydroxypregna-5,17(20)-diene-21-carboxylic acid melting at 245°-250°. The product has the formula ##STR3##
