A solution of E-8-(3,4-diacetoxybenzylidene)-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-3-methylquinoline (prepared according to Example 5) (3 g) in 2N HCl (50 ml) was heated at 80° for 11/2 hours. The precipitated crystals were removed by filtration and dried to give the title compound as the hydrochloride, quarterhydrate (2.6 g) m.p. 265° C. decomp.
